Oshkosh was very quiet when we arrived, which helped keep the stress
I hope to get my hands on a loaner exhaust system tonight, and install it
on the aircraft on Saturday and fly it home. The original exhaust will go back
to the manufacturer for upgrade to the latest configuration. I’ve got
a fairly early exhaust for this engine and the manufacturer said that he has
had some problems with failures on my engine model. He has done a series
of design changes over the years, and the latest configuration seems to be
doing fairly well.
The root cause of the failure is hard to say at this point. I need to take a
much closer look at the pieces after I get them off. It is possible that my
4000 rpm overspeed event in 2008 may have put a lot of stress on the
exhaust, or maybe it was an event I had with a partially plugged injector
nozzle where the engine ran on three cylinders at high power for a few
seconds before I pulled the power back. Or, maybe I just got unlucky, as the
early exhaust systems had too high failure rate.
